WELLS COUNTY YOUTH ATTEND 4-H ROUND-UP

Twenty Wells County 4-H members recently attended 4-H Round-Up at Purdue University. Kevin Wanzer was the Keynote Speaker to the Round-Up delegates. Wanzer gave a presentation entitled “A.L.O.H.A”. Wanzer presented on being a role-model, the presentation is more than just a message it gives the audience tools to use to be great leaders.
Part of the conference included a community service project benefitting the Ronald McDonald House of Indiana. The over 600 youth participants donated food products and items to assist the families.
4-H members also participated in a wide range of action packed Career Day classes offered by various schools of study at Purdue, Ivy Tech and other organizations.
The Round-Up delegates were also entertained by the State 4-H Chorus, State 4-H Band and various 4-H Share-the-Fun talent acts and skits from across Indiana.

Pressure Canner Testing on July 1

Purdue University Cooperative Extension Service of Wells County will be offering a Pressure Canner Testing session on Thursday July 1st from 9:00 – 11:00 AM and 1:00 – 4:00 PM at the Wells County Community Center at the 4-H Park.

Pressure canning is the only recommended method for canning meat, poultry, seafood and vegetables. Using boiling water canners for these low-acid foods poses a real risk of botulism poisoning. The USDA recommends a dial gauge pressure canner be checked once a season for accuracy.

The Extension Service will check the dial gauge and lid for $3.00. If you bring in the whole dial gauge canner, a full canner assessment can be made for $5.00. Another canner testing session will be held on August 2nd if you cannot attend this session.

Preserving Nature’s Bounty

Picture your garden overflowing with plump, juicy tomatoes, shiny green peppers, and crisp green beans. Imagine picking juicy peaches, pears, and apples from the local orchards or selecting fresh produce from baskets at the farmers’ markets.

Why not save some of this bounty to enjoy all through the year? Food preservation is the process s of treating and handling food to stop or greatly slow down spoilage, loss of quality, edibility, or nutritive value caused or accelerated by micro-organisms.

Learn to preserve foods safely. The Purdue Extension Service in Wells County will be conducting ‘Preserving Nature’s Bounty’ workshops to discuss safe home food preservation procedures and to answer the frequently asked questions on canning, freezing, and drying foods. Workshops are scheduled for
June 23rd, 1:30- 3:00 p.m. at the Wells Community Center at the 4-H Park
July 27th, 6:00 – 7:30 p.m. at the Wells County Public Library, Bluffton, IN
August 10th, 6:30-8:00 p.m. at the Wells Community Center at the 4-H Park

4-H TALENT SHOW DURING FAIR WEEK

Entry forms are available for the annual 4-H Talent Show which will be held Tuesday July 20, 7:30PM at the annual Wells County 4-H Fair in Bluffton.
The contestants will be divided into three grade classifications: Class A, Grades 1, and 2; Class B, Grades 3-6; and Class C, Grades 7-12. Grade in school is based on January 1, year of the fair. Within each class, participants may enter in Vocal, Instrumental or other. All contestants must be present 4-H members. Youth will be able to participate in a sound check between 5:00 and 6:30PM.
Awards will be presented to winners in each category and the Mack Shultz Award will be presented to the top talent winner. The award is presented in memory of Mack Shultz who was a ten year 4-H member who loved music. His Air Force jet disappeared off the coast of Florida in the Bermuda Triangle. Mack was a son of the late Shirley and Galen Shultz and brother to Peggy (Norman) Schweikhardt of Warren, Indiana.
