Pressure Canner Testing on July 1

Purdue University Cooperative Extension Service of Wells County will be offering a Pressure Canner Testing session on Thursday July 1st from 9:00 – 11:00 AM and 1:00 – 4:00 PM at the Wells County Community Center at the 4-H Park.

Pressure canning is the only recommended method for canning meat, poultry, seafood and vegetables. Using boiling water canners for these low-acid foods poses a real risk of botulism poisoning. The USDA recommends a dial gauge pressure canner be checked once a season for accuracy.

The Extension Service will check the dial gauge and lid for $3.00. If you bring in the whole dial gauge canner, a full canner assessment can be made for $5.00. Another canner testing session will be held on August 2nd if you cannot attend this session.

Contact the Wells County Office of the Purdue University Cooperative Extension at 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM if you have any questions.

Preserving Nature’s Bounty

Picture your garden overflowing with plump, juicy tomatoes, shiny green peppers, and crisp green beans. Imagine picking juicy peaches, pears, and apples from the local orchards or selecting fresh produce from baskets at the farmers’ markets.

Why not save some of this bounty to enjoy all through the year? Food preservation is the process s of treating and handling food to stop or greatly slow down spoilage, loss of quality, edibility, or nutritive value caused or accelerated by micro-organisms.

Learn to preserve foods safely. The Purdue Extension Service in Wells County will be conducting ‘Preserving Nature’s Bounty’ workshops to discuss safe home food preservation procedures and to answer the frequently asked questions on canning, freezing, and drying foods. Workshops are scheduled for

Norwell FFA Earns Superior Chapter Award at the 81st Indiana FFA State Convention

West Lafayette, Indiana - Norwell FFA sent six members to the 81st Indiana FFA State Convention June 14-16th on the campus of Purdue University. The FFA chapter achieved the Superior Chapter award for their work towards community developement, student development and chapter development and were honored at the last general session of the convention.

For 2010, “Driven by the Blue, Guided by the Gold” was the theme for the three day convention as FFA members from across the state gathered to celebrate 81 years of premier leadership, personal growth, and career success through agriculture education.

Members from Norwell got the chance to attend the five general sessions in Elliot Hall of Music. In those sessions, members heard from keynote speakers--Rhett Laubach at the first general session, an Oklahoma native and leadership guru, and Sam Glenn, the inspiring comedian and chalk artist, at the second general session. Additionally, Randa Braune, the National FFA Western Region Vice President from Texas, addressed the convention at the final general session.

The Indiana FFA State Convention is an opportunity for FFA members to be rewarded for their hard work they have put in throughout the past year in Career Development Events, Supervised Agricultural Experiences, as well as chapter recognition. Members also get the opportunity to attend leadership workshops, a trade show, and various banquets and luncheons.

The Indiana FFA Organization was established in 1929 and today serves 9,600 members as they develop their potential for premier leadership, personal growth, and career success through agriculture education.

Want to see FFA members in action? Come to the Wells County 4-H fair and visit the Norwell FFA and the Southern Wells FFA as they host the Children's Barnyard. It opens Saturday, July 17 through July 21 from 5:30 p.m.-9:00 p.m.

4-H LIVESTOCK HEALTH RULES ANNOUNCED

The Indiana State Board of Animal Health will not be requiring a “Certificate of Veterinary Inspection” for livestock shows this year. This policy was started in 2007 and will continue again this year.
What this means for many 4-H exhibitors is that they will not have to have their local veterinarian look at the animals and write a (CVI) Certificate of Veterinary Inspection as was done for many years.
It will be up to the livestock exhibitors to carefully monitor their animals during the summer months to keep their health in order to exhibit at a fair where they could expose other animals. Most county fairs will still have a veterinarian at their livestock check in day to view the animals and look for any signs or symptoms of a contagious disease.
County fairs and their livestock shows are now required to record animal identification numbers for cattle, swine, sheep and goats. This is done in order locate various animals and exhibitors in the event of some type of livestock disease outbreak.
For more information about your counties livestock health requirements, contact the Indiana State Board of Health at 1-877-747-3038, your local 4-H Rule Book or veterinarian.

JULY 1st DEADLINE FOR 4-H RECORDS

Wells County 4-H members are busy finishing their project manuals and records (what can be completed) so that they can be checked (reviewed) by the 4-H Club Leader on or before July 1st. Once a member has their manual and record checked, the 4-H Club Leader will issue them a signed certificate stating they have completed the required activities. This certificate will be shown upon check in at the 4-H Fair Expo Hall (non livestock projects) and at the 4-H Park West Road (livestock projects). Dog and Cat exhibits will be checked at a June workshop or club meeting.
Members who do not have a signed certificate from their leader will not be able to check their 4-H projects in at the 4-H Fair.
Mini 4-H member rules remain the same. They simply complete their project exhibit and bring it to the 4-H fair.
Livestock members should complete as much of the feed record sheet as they can. Once the 4-H Auction is finished you will be able to finish your record and turn it in.
Club boxes will be on display in the Community Center for members to turn in the finished Record Notebooks and folders during the 4-H Fair.
The Wells County 4-H Council along with the 4-H Association and 4-H Leaders all endorse the July 1st rule which helps encourage youth to complete their entire project.
For more information about record books, check your Wells County 4-H Rule Book or contact your 4-H Club Leader or the Wells County Office of the Purdue Cooperative Extension Service, 260-824-6412
